Immunization Services of Pneumococcal 13-Valent Conjugate Vaccine for Children in Taipei City

1. Introduction to Streptococcus Pneumoniae
Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) usually lurks in the nasopharyngeal parts of the human body, which can be transmitted by respiratory secretions or droplets to induce invasive pneumococcal infection when people have reduced immunity. Infants and children under 5 years of age and adults who are older than 65 years of age are the high-risk groups for getting invasive pneumococcal disease.

2. Service Object
In order to implement the child health care policy, startingJanuary 2, 2012, children aged between 1 year old and less than 5 years of age, holding the medical care subsidy certificates can take the immunization services of Pneumococcal 13-Valent Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) at public expense in Taipei City with the Centers for Disease Control, R.O.C (Taiwan). Starting March 1, 2013, children aged between 2 years old and less than 5 years of age, holding the medical care subsidy certificates can take the immunization services of Pneumococcal 13-Valent Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) at public expense. In line with the policy by Centers for Disease Control, the Taipei City Government has also started to provide the PCV 13 inoculation service since March 1 in 2013 for 1 to 2-year-old children registered in Taipei City and who have obtained Children's Medicaid Card. In coordination with the Center of Disease Control’s new policy of providing the immunization service of Pneumococcal 13-Valent Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) to children between the ages of 1 and 5 at public expense starting from January 1, 2014, Taipei City Government ceases the immunization service of Pneumococcal 13-Valent Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) to the children between the ages of 1 and 2 at public expense starting from January 1, 2014.
In coordination with the Centers for Disease Control new policy of providing the immunization service of Pneumococcal 13-Valent Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) to the children between the age of 0 and 5 at public expense starting from January 1, 2015, Taipei City Government ceases the immunization service of Pneumococcal 13-Valent Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) to the children between age of 1 and 2 at public expense starting from January 1, 2014.

3. Service Locations and Notes
To provide the best accessibility and convenience for parents when they take their children to receive this publicly funded vaccine, there were 194 branches of contracted hospitals offering this kind of immunization service. For children to get pneumococcus vaccines, their parents need to bring child health insurance IC card, Child Health Handbook, and required documents.
