From the analysis of the demographic composition, we can understand the condition of the population, analyze the nature and source of social problems, and infer relationships between local people and socioeconomic factors. The demographic composition is an important indicator of social and economic changes, and also an important reference for current and future social welfare policy-making by the government.

 

1. Population Density

At the end of July 2024, the total population of Taipei City was 2,504,731, ranking 4th in the nation, with a population density of 9,215.36 people per square kilometer, the highest in the country.


 

2. Age Distribution

Generally, there are more people with work ability, the dependency ratio will be lower; more labor input in the production will be beneficial to the economic development. As of the end of 2023, the young population (ages 0-14) was 310,069, the working age population (ages 15-64) was 1,648,662, and the elderly population (ages 65 and above) was 553,155. The dependency ratio was 52.36%, which is a 2% increase from 2022.

 

 

3. Marital Status

In 2023, 13,685 couples completed marriage registration, with a crude marriage rate of 5.48‰; 5,037 couples divorced, with a crude divorce rate of 2.02‰. Compared to 2022, the crude marriage rate increased by 0.2‰, while the crude divorce rate increased by 0.21‰.

 

 

4. Native Distribution

Indigenous ethnic groups include the Amis, Atayal, Paiwan, Bunun, Rukai, Pinuyumayan, Cou, Saisiyat, Yami (Tao), Thao, Kavalan, Truku, Sakizaya, Sediq, Hla’alua, and Kanakanavu. By the end of 2023, the indigenous population in Taipei City was 17,150, with the majority belonging to the Amis and Atayal tribes, predominantly residing in Neihu and Wenshan Districts.

 

 

5. New migrants and foreign population

According to statistics, the population of new migrants in Taipei City has been gradually increasing. As of the end of June 2024, the total number of new migrants in Taipei City was 66,567, with the top three administrative districts being Wanhua District (7,984 people; 11.99%), Da’an District (6,875 people; 10.33%), and Zhongshan District (6,658 people; 10.00%). To create a friendly environment for new migrants and help them adapt to married life as quickly as possible, the Taipei City Government has formulated comprehensive care and guidance measures for new migrants, issued the "Taipei City New Immigrant Care and Guidance Measures Implementation Plan," and established the Advisory Council on New Immigrant Care and Guidance Measures. In addition, Taipei City has also established a dedicated website for new migrants (URL: https://nite.taipei/), providing information on various related activities, services, and contact points, and supporting up to 9 languages to facilitate the use of new migrants in Taipei City, making Taipei City a multicultural and immigrant-friendly city.
