The Department of Health and Department of Education, Taipei City Government visited George Vocational High School of Taipei on September 8 to orient young people with the accurate knowledge of the harms of cigarettes and e-cigarettes. They advocated students to say no to cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and resist their temptations. They were also suggested to encourage their families and peers to say no to smoking.
Smoking both cigarettes and e-cigarettes is harmful to our health
Hsu Fang-yuan, specialist of the Department of Health, Taipei City Government expressed that there are more than 7,000 chemicals in cigarette, and 93 of them are known carcinogens. The cancers likely to be induced are lung cancer, oral cavity cancer, laryngeal cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, and more. In addition, the e-cigarette is becoming popular around the world. WHO also pointed out that there is no evidence that e-cigarette can help quit smoking. According to the random testing of Food and Drug Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare, the results indicate that most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which may cause addiction. And its harms are no less than that of a traditional cigarette. Moreover, e-cigarettes have the added risk of exploding. Many manufacturers use cute packaging, and vapors with special flavors or fruit flavors to attract young people to smoke e-cigarettes.
No smoking campus safeguards big kids’ rights of health
The Department of Health, Taipei City Government expressed that to encourage young people to quit smoking earlier it collaborates with more than 120 certified medical institutions to provide medical education services to the second-generation smoking cessation program. It subsidizes patient’s two courses of treatment each year. In each course of treatment, there are 8 medical consultation services. People can also dial the quit smoking hotline 0800-636363.
